Senator Mike Johanns is cosponsoring bipartisan legislation to eliminate earmarks. The Earmark Elimination Act would establish a permanent ban on earmarks and provide for enforcement through a new Senate point of order.
Johanns said, “Earmarks are a symbol of wasteful Washington spending and I hope we can eliminate them permanently as we focus on getting our fiscal house in order. The current ban on earmarks ends at the end of this year and some legislators are clamoring for the return of this practice. I believe earmarking lacks the transparency Americans deserve from their government.”
